Not the real Lennon, but his spirit, perhaps, rendered in the form of a touring bus packed with audio and video recording equipment for students to check out. The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus was parked at North Medford High School for most of the school day Thursday. Groups of music, theater, video production and other students got to see the gear inside, including robotic cameras, a professional video-editing system with Final Cut Pro, and a recording studio. Drums, guitars, a microphone and a keyboard were also set up outside for students to jam on. "We're out here trying to get that creative spark, get these kids involved with everything that has to do with music production, I guess multimedia production at this point," said Bryce Quig-Hartman, tour bus engineer. It was one of the group's seven stops in the Pacific Northwest this year. The bus's origins go back 19 years to a John Lennon songwriting contest. "The bus came about as sort of as a promotional piece for the contest," Quig-Hartman said. "There was a lot of intrigue, obviously. 'Whoa, this is great. When can it show up to my school?' " Executive Director Brian Rothschild proposed that the bus travel around full time, Quig-Hartman said, and Yoko Ono Lennon gave the idea the green light, so long as it didn't cost participants a dime. Since then it has traveled to schools across the U.S. and Canada year-round, giving free tours and putting on workshops at schools, retailers and festivals. Quig-Hartman, who has been traveling aboard the bus for three years, said he was a classically trained pianist who got interested in the science of sound and decided to head to college to study it more. "That's actually where I found out about the bus," he said. "Basically straight out of college, hopped on the bus, joined the circus." Kendra Taylor, associate music director for North Medford High School, said exposure to the necessary tools is important for students considering careers in audiovisual fields. "This gives them an idea of what they can do if they just have the technology and the help," Taylor said. North Medford senior Quinn Pauck, who plays guitar and bass in the school's jazz band, said he was impressed by the quality of the recording equipment. "It's awesome in there," Pauck said. Senior Megan Anderson, who is involved in North Medford's theater program, said she loved getting a look at the state-of-the-art gear. The sound-mixing equipment really caught her eye, because she's worked with similar systems at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and Camelot Theatre. "Since sophomore year, I've known that I wanted to do theater, and I knew that I wanted to be backstage," she said. "I kind of discovered that I really liked the sound-mixing aspect of it, especially because then I could work in live theater. I could do movie studios, I could do radio shows, I could do things like this. It's just really cool to be able to see another option that I hadn't thought of before."
