Auction brings in $17,000 for Crater scholarship fund CENTRAL POINT -- A community effort to raise enough money to provide a scholarship to every Crater graduate took a giant step forward last week. A fund-raising auction Dec. 4 on behalf of the Crater Foundation netted nearly $17,000 for scholarships. The sum represents a 46 percent increase over last year's event. Foundation president Harvey Tonn said he was overwhelmed by the community's response to the request for contributions. "The fund-raiser will greatly contribute to the foundation's `2000' goal of providing a scholarship for every Crater senior student who applies." Adding to the proceeds was $9,000 from Bret Moore, of W.L. Moore Construction. The money was the district's share of proceeds from the sale of a Moore home. For several years, Moore has worked with Crater students to build a home. Students gain experience and class credit. For their work, students' share of the home's sale goes to the foundation for scholarships. The Crater Foundation has awarded a variety of scholarships for several years. This year foundations members are trying to raise enough money to provide some support to every student continuing his or her education after high school.
