PUBLIC SAFETY Four injured in Tuesday fire linked to marijuana processing Comment By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Follow @@RyanPfeil MailTribune.com By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Follow @@RyanPfeil Posted Jan. 27, 2016 at 1:25 PM Updated Jan 27, 2016 at 3:58 PM By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Follow @@RyanPfeil Posted Jan. 27, 2016 at 1:25 PM Updated Jan 27, 2016 at 3:58 PM » Social News Four people were hospitalized with burns Tuesday afternoon after a Medford fire in a travel trailer that started during an attempt to produce cannabis extract with butane. Medford Fire-Rescue responded to the fire, in the 800 block of South Peach Street, at 3:30 p.m. The travel trailer was parked in a driveway. "Witnesses reported that the subjects involved were frantically removing property from the trailer prior to fleeing the scene," a news release from Medford police said. Medford Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Ken Goodson said crews responded with one engine, but the fire had been extinguished by the time they arrived on scene. The fire caused some damage to the RV. "It’s an older RV that’s in pretty rough shape to begin with," Goodson said. An investigation into the fire's cause showed the trailer occupants had been involved in a process to extract oils high in THC from marijuana. Medford police said the process involves forcing butane through a tube of cannabis, which extracts the substance, called butane honey oil. "The process then often involves heating the oil to evaporate the vapors," which creates intense fumes that are highly flammable, police said. Two men had serious burns to their hands and faces. Another man and a woman suffered burns that were less severe. Three were treated and released from Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, and one was admitted to Providence Medford Medical Center, Medford fire officials said. Their conditions Wednesday were not immediately available. The fire was the third started by butane honey oil operations that Medford police have investigated this year, said Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau. On Jan. 2, police and fire agencies responded to a garage fire in the first block of Hamilton Street. Troy Wyatt, 42, and Tanya Fitzhugh, 46, have since been indicted on felony charges of unlawful manufacture of marijuana and first-degree child neglect stemming from that case, according to court records. On Jan. 11, police responded to a honey-oil fire in the 800 block of Crestbrook Road. Justin Siebricht, 20, and Marissa Grove, 19, were cited and released for unlawful manufacture of marijuana in that case, police reported. From 2013 to 2015, there was one honey oil fire each year, police reported. The Tuesday case remains under investigation, with assistance from federal authorities, police said.
