Main St., Ashland, is ending a decade-plus-run in downtown. Owner Sandi Globus said she plans to retire and will begin a going-out-of-business sale starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 2. The store's fashion fabrics include silks, Italian wools and linens, contemporary Japanese fabric, knits, rayon and specialty quilting cottons. Store fixtures, counters and business equipment also will be sold. Rental vacancy rate 2.27 percent Southern Oregon Rental Owners Asociation members reported a 2.27 percent vacancy rate in November, with 125 empty units out of 5,504 reporting. The organization representing landlords in Jackson and Josephine counties reported a 2.47 vacancy rate in October. The November 2014 vacancy rate was 2.48 percent. Economic indicators improving in Rogue Valley The Rogue Valley still lags the pace of activity experienced prior to the most recent recession, but has made substantial progress over the past two years and is now seeing a better-than-average pace of economic growth, according to recently released University of Oregon Regional Economic Indexes for October. Indicators show the Rogue Valley's new residential building permits continue to lag, along with those in Eugene-Springfield and Salem, while the Portland metro region continues to take off. Residential housing sales, however, remain strong in all regions. The report indicated low unemployment rates are boosting economic vitality in all regions and are particularly strong in Salem and the Rogue Valley. Tim Duy, senior director of the Oregon Economic Forum, said low levels of initial unemployment claims are pushing the measures sharply higher and signal continued job growth.
