Jacksonville truck plan nixed JACKSONVILLE -- City planners breathed a sigh of relief this week when a Jackson County hearings officer denied a mining company's request to haul 50,000 yards of rock through Jacksonville's main street. The hearings officer cited transportation issues as the reason for denying Jackson Creek Sand Company's request to haul rock out of the historic Opp Mine on Reservoir Road. City Planner Jason Locke estimated the plan would have added as many as 20 more trucks rumbling down California Street, the city's main thoroughfare and a popular tourist attraction. Already, trucks hauling rock from a gravel pit on Paradise Ranch Road make 150 trips daily down California Street. Even better news, said city administrator Paul Wyntergreen, is a hearing scheduled this month to talk about a bypass that would take all truck traffic out of downtown Jacksonville. The Jackson County Planning Commission will meet with Jacksonville city leaders at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, in the Large Group Room at Jacksonville Elementary School. The Planning Commission last winter made the motion to approve the bypass route. The commission will hold the public hearing this month to listen to comments about the proposal, Wyntergreen said.
