Michael is in his final days of an eight-year hitch with the Army, and Erinn is finishing work on a master's degree while watching their toddler, Eli. They've been living outside Honolulu in Wahiawa and are heading to San Antonio, where they've rented an apartment and lined up job interviews next month. Their well planned move ran into a sizable roadblock, however, as first a slow down and now a walkout by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union has clogged West Coast ports. The U.S. economy already has suffered billions of dollars in losses, and individual companies millions, because of the labor dispute between dockworkers and the Pacific Maritime Association, representing port management. Along with rotting oranges and electronic instruments, the Grabers' car is tied up in the Port of Los Angeles and their household belongings are sitting on a Honolulu dock. "This was our second move with the military, so we had an idea what to expect," said Erinn, who is visiting her family in Medford. The plan was to await Michael's arrival here and then fly to Dallas, Texas, where they were supposed to pick up their car and belongings on March 9. That likely won't happen, even if the labor issues are patched up. "Our car was shipped Feb. 2, and normally it takes 30 days," she said. "Now they're estimating it will be March 23. It's thrown off our whole schedule. We both have multiple job interviews set up between March 12 and 23, and we were supposed to move into our apartment March 10. We had it all scheduled perfect." The household goods packed and ready for their 1,200-square-foot San Antonio townhouse were picked up Feb. 3 and were supposed to take 45 days to arrive in Texas. That won't happen, either. "The car is the tricky part, because renting a car for a month is very expensive," Erinn said. "We're looking at buying a second vehicle, but it wasn't in our timeline." There will be other challenges involving what necessities to buy and what to wait for. Michael Graber will become part of the Texas National Guard, but his gear is still in Hawaii. "Transitioning out of the military is uncertain and difficult already. This has just been an added stresser," Erinn said. "We chose Texas because of the economy and cost of living. It's a better area for us to start a permanent relocation." The labor dispute that has frazzled retailers, wholesalers and suppliers in recent weeks has left the Grabers fending for themselves. "Our last transition, we had a church home group for support," Erinn said. "But we are moving to an area without family. We don't have a huge support system yet." The Associated Press reported the West Coast handles about $1 trillion worth of goods annually, including Asian imports such as electronics, household goods and clothing, as well as U.S. exports such as produce and meat. The Western ports handle 43.5 percent of the country's container cargo shipments, representing the movement of 12.5 percent of America’s gross domestic product. Government figures estimate the payroll for 13,600 ILWU workers manning West Coast ports was $1.4 billion in 2013. Full-time ILWU workers working 2,000 hours annually (less than 39 hours weekly) earn an average of $142,000 in wages, with a benefits package worth more than $82,000 a worker.
