Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 24, 2005 Since You Asked Restaurant inspection numbers have caveat I have been a fan of Munchie’s for years and was surprised to see in your recent article that it did so poorly on the county’s restaurant inspection. So should I find a new giant burrito? — Scott B., Ashland Don’t run away from an old favorite based on numbers alone. While Munchie’s is listed on Jackson County’s Web site ( www.jacksoncounty.org ) with a failing inspection score of 58, it quickly passed a re-inspection to remain open to the public. The county health department started posting restaurant inspection scores on the Internet last month. The restaurant also has changed ownership since its semi-annual inspection in March. Michael Cooke, former deli manager for Ashland Food Cooperative, bought Munchie’s in April from long-time operator Arlene Dian. Advertisement Cooke scored an 86 on his initial evaluation, which is reflected in health department files, not on the Internet site. Health inspectors in April marked Munchie’s down for cold foods held at unsafe temperatures and employees drinking from unapproved containers while on the job. Restaurants must score a 70 or higher to comply with health guidelines. The county’s Internet list of inspection scores comes with the caveat that they can sometimes be misleading. According to county food program coordinator Greg Chakarun, a score of 85 for a full-service restaurant is actually quite good. Almost as good as those burritos.
