Frank Morgan Wheeler, 44, of Sebastopol, Calif., was found hiding in a blackberry bush near The  Expo after a short car and foot chase. His mugshot in the Jackson County Jail shows several scrapes and minor cuts on his face from the thorns. Wheeler was arraigned in Jackson County Circuit Court Thursday on charges of attempt to elude in a vehicle and on foot, reckless driving, second-degree criminal mischief and attempting to commit a felony, records show. Jail logs show he remains in the jail on those charges and four out-of-county warrants on additional car theft and aggravated theft charges. His bail is set at $135,000. Central Point police Lt. Greg Bruce reported an officer spotted Wheeler lurking in the parking lot of Central Point's Super 8 Motel, near where Biddle Road stops and East Pine Street begins, at 4:19 a.m. Thursday. "He was peering into cars. It looked very suspicious," Bruce said. A probable cause affidavit says the officer caught Wheeler trying to steal tires off a vehicle, which he had up on jacks. The officer turned on the patrol car's overhead lights while pulling into the parking lot to stop him. Wheeler then jumped into a black Honda Accord and "peeled out," the affidavit says. Bruce said Wheeler left the stolen parts and tires behind. Bruce said police pursued Wheeler down Peninger Road until he crashed the Accord and ran. Police located him hiding in blackberry bushes in a nearby field. The affidavit says he was arrested at 4:41 a.m. Thursday. Court records show Wheeler has another open Jackson County case that also involves elude and reckless driving charges. Wheeler was indicted on those charges, along with a charge of possession of hydrocodone, in January, records show. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
