Panthers rally, fall in OT South Medford, minus two starters, falls in overtime to South Eugene Stretched thin by injury and illness, the South Medford girls basketball team still almost found a way to win. Minus two starters, the Panthers climbed out of a 15-point hole in the fourth quarter to force overtime before falling in the extra session, 72-69, to South Eugene on Friday. South Medford was without starting point guard Kelsey Corbin (flu) and post Brittany Farrer, who is out with a stress fracture. Despite the missing starters, the Panthers nearly toppled a couple self-imposed obstacles. South Eugene benefited from 21 Panther turnovers and made good on 26 of 34 from the free-throw line, while South Medford finished just 14-for-26 from the charity stripe. Advertisement "We were playing with one girl (Katie Singler) with varsity minutes, basically," said South Medford coach Andrea Jaime. "We were pretty shaky in the first quarter. After that, we were where we wanted to be." With South Medford trailing 64-63 in the waning seconds, junior Casey Martin snagged an offensive rebound and was fouled on the putback attempt with the clock showing zero. Martin calmly sank the game-tying free throw before missing the second to force the overtime. The Axemen grabbed an early lead in the extra period and made good on their free throws down the stretch to secure the win. South Medford finished 27 of 51 from the field and limited South Eugene to 22-for-49 shooting. "We got a lot of high-percentage shots," said Jaime. "But when you turn it over as much as we did, then that sets you back. "Considering that, and the fact we were short-handed, we played pretty well." South Eugene led 55-43 entering the final period and held a 15-point advantage with about six minutes to play. Singler, however, wouldn’t let her team fade. The junior, who finished with 25 points on 10 of 15 shooting to go with six assists, scored 10 in the final quarter to lead the comeback. Singler picked up most of her points on aggressive drives to the basket and helped give the Panthers a brief one-point lead with under two minutes to play. The Axemen regained the lead late, setting up Martin’s game-tying free throw. Marissa Towry added 18 points and pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds in the losing effort.
