I support the region's many wineries but I am concerned what their growth will mean to our rural lifestyle if urban commercial activity is allowed to expand onto farmland. Belle Fiore contends it is "merely following OLCC rules dictating kitchen and menu requirements". However, the OLCC does not require any food service at wineries. If a winery wishes to have minors present in a tasting room, the winery is required to offer family-friendly food to show that alcohol is not the sole activity. Most importantly, a winery's food service must comply with land use-regulations, and a winery cannot use an OLCC minor posting as a justification for food service that exceeds the limited food service outlined in Senate Bill 841 that specifically prohibits "menu options that cause the kitchen to operate as a cafe or dining establishment open to the general public". Steve Sacks Ashland Fireworks still booming Thanks to Kate Bourne for her letter concerning fireworks. We have three dogs. One of them is super sensitive to loud noises. She can hear distant thunderclaps 10 minutes before we can hear anything. I have to sedate her when fireworks go off or she would probably shake herself to death. Some people have no consideration for others who might have to go to work early in the morning and need their sleep. There is an adage that says there is a time and a place for everything. Shooting off fireworks after midnight is not one of those things. I was getting ready to call and complain to the police when they finally stopped. Mrs. Clinton is lying under oath. She's disregarding laws. Malfeasance. A lawmaker from West Virginia says, "Hang Hillary Clinton from the Washington Mall." Where do the Republicans get off? Former president G.W. Bush has a record of missing emails. Between 2003 and 2005, 22,000 emails conveniently went missing. What, no calling? Here is what a real lie sounds like. Former secretary of state under Bush, Colin Powell sat in front of the United Nations Security Council and the whole world and stated with his vial of B.S. that leaving Saddam Hussein in possession of weapons of mass destruction was not an option. He lied. This took place February 5, 2003. Because he lied, 4,489 veterans have lost their lives. Iraq has lost 1.4 million lives as a result of oil, 4.2 million additional people injured and 4.5 million became refuges. Of our veterans, 32,220 were wounded, and thus far 300,000 suffer from PTSD. All due to the Republican Party under G.W. Bush. Here's your smoking gun, Republicans. Michael A. Long Trail Plan a training center It is time to think big and "outside the box." The World Track and Field Championships will be held in Eugene in five years, and resources in Eugene and the Willamette Valley will be stretched thin. This track meet, held in the United States for the first time, equates to the Olympic Games and features the top athletes from around the world. So here is the idea: Teams will be establishing training centers in Oregon prior to the meet. The Rogue Valley has seven or eight great track facilities, great regional beauty (altitude training at Crater Lake — wow), housing, food, easy transportation to Eugene (Medford International Airport, direct access to I-5), and outstanding medical support for the athletes. Make our valley a regional training center for the meet. Put together an organizing committee, write a proposal and summit to Vin Lananna, meet director at the University of Oregon. In previous international meets, teams have had training centers as far away as Vancouver, B.C. By supporting this meet, our valley could generate economic gains, worldwide exposure for the Rogue Valley, and our youth could watch world-class athletes train and prepare for the highest level of competition.
