After recovering from a 51-47 deficit with 2:37 to go, Eagle senior guard Patrick Hillis hit the game-winning shot — a 16-foot jumper over Raider guard Steve Farley — with three seconds remaining, and freshman forward Steven Ishmael stole the ensuing inbounds pass to seal the game. It was the Eagles’ first lead of the second half. "Both teams played well defensively," Southern Oregon coach Brian McDermott said. "We struggled a little bit offensively, as did they." The Raiders (13-8, 10-3 Cascade), who had a five-game win streak snapped and fell into a four-way tie for first place atop the Cascade Conference standings, led for much of the game, including 28-22 in the first half and 43-37 midway through the second. Advertisement With the game tied 51-all, All-American forward Shea Washington appeared to give SOU the lead on a running jumper with 40 seconds to go, but instead of an opportunity for a 3-point play, he was called for a charge. Washington went 3-for-5 from the floor but converted 14 straight free throws en route to a team-best 22 points. Northwest (15-10, 7-6 Cascade) received a solid 23-point, eight-rebound effort from sophomore center Aaron Sawyer, and Hillis, who accounted for four of the last six points, finished with 10. Senior guard Brad Coen canned four 3-pointers for 14 points for SOU, and post Jeff Williams had 11 despite suffering from back spasms. The Raiders shot just 39 percent (14-for-36), and NU was 39 percent (20-for-51). SOU outrebounded the Eagles just 32-27 after a dominating first half in the category. The Raiders charged to an 11-6 edge before the Eagles scored 12 straight points for its largest lead. Coen then hit three treys during a late first-half surge that helped result in a 28-27 SOU halftime advantage. "We were a little banged up tonight," said McDermott. "It was tough and typical road stuff." The Eagles (8-16, 3-10) broke the game open early in the second half and took a 13-point lead with 11 minutes remaining, only to see the Raiders (3-21, 2-11) go on a 20-1 run over the next four minutes and transfer the momentum. Northwest trailed by three with 16 seconds left when Cassie Snyder hit a 3-pointer to send the game to overtime. In the extra period, the Eagles took control with tough pressure defense and outscored SOU 9-6. Bekah Proctor led Northwest with 23 points, 11 rebounds, and five steals, while Andi Peterson’s 23 points and 11 boards paced SOU.
