Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend January 2, 2006 Teen apparently drowns in floodwaters A 19-year-old Siskiyou County woman’s body was found in a flood-swollen stream Sunday, a day after she was reported missing by family members. Sheriff’s deputies flying in a helicopter spotted a body in Yreka Creek about a mile downstream from where Lacey Garcia was last seen. Rescuers on the ground later identified the body as Garcia’s. In a media release, Siskiyou County sheriff’s spokeswoman Susan Gravenkamp said a medical examiner will determine the exact cause of Garcia’s death later this week. Gravenkamp said Garcia’s mother, Sabrina Hewitt, reported the young woman missing just before noon on Saturday. Hewitt told sheriff’s deputies that Garcia lived with her in a residence on property they shared with Garcia’s grandfather, off Highway 3 just southwest of Yreka’s city limits. The grandfather lives in a separate residence across Yreka Creek, which normally flows through a culvert. He told deputies he found a book Garcia had been reading in his house, so he knew she had been there Friday. Advertisement Gravenkamp said Yreka Creek had overflowed the culvert, and water was flowing swiftly over the road between the two residences at the time Garcia disappeared. Gravenkamp said the young woman would have had to cross the flooded road to reach her home. Gravenkamp cautioned the public against walking into floodwaters that appear to be shallow, because there is no way to know their true depth, and swift currents can be too strong to escape. She said even a strong swimmer may not survive falling into a flooded creek.
