Commissioners voted this morning to buy the cameras from TASER International. Payments will be spread out over five years, with $55,360 spent the first year for the cameras and data storage for footage, followed by four annual payments of $54,720 for maintenance and additional data storage, according to the county. The first payment will come from a combination of grant money and forfeiture proceeds from the Medford Area Drug and Gang Enforcement Team. Subsequent payments will come from the sheriff's general fund, according to Capt. Tim Snaith, who said the department is seeking additional grants. Snaith said he expects the cameras will be a useful tool and provide accountability to the public. "I think the general public’s expectation is for their law enforcement personnel to have some transparency," Snaith said. Medford police will present a proposal Jan. 7 to the City Council for more than double the number of cameras being purchased by the sheriff's department . Medford Lt. Scott Clauson said the department will ask for approval to spend $609,000 for 85 cameras, which includes money for upkeep and data storage. Those funds already have been included in the department's budget, he said. Clauson estimated the first year will cost $145,000, followed by four years of $116,000 payments — though that could change, depending on data storage needs. Like Snaith, he said the equipment will be useful for officers on duty. "It’s just one more tool that’s out there, part of the whole package that will help us prosecute cases," Clauson said. Though the departments are using separate contracts to purchase the equipment and data storage, all the cameras will be the same to streamline the process of accessing footage.
