Senior pitcher Miranda Gillaspie was named pitcher of the week for the second straight week and for the fifth time in her two-year Raider career. Junior Tanisha Burch earned player-of-the-week status for the first time. Gillaspie keyed SOU’s doubleheader sweeps of league rivals Western Baptist (17-0 and 6-5) and Concordia (2-0 and 8-0) by registering three victories, not allowing any earned runs and giving up only 11 hits in 12 innings. The Redmond product has won eight straight games and has yielded only two earned runs in 36 innings since April 2. Now 13-5 overall with a 1.53 ERA, she is tied for the conference lead in victories. Burch, a designated hitter from Scappoose, had one of the greatest individual offensive weekends in program history. She was 6-for-9 (.667) in the four games with nine RBIs, five extra-base hits and three home runs. Burch tormented Western Baptist with a University Field-record six RBIs and two of the homers in a 3-for-3 performance in the 17-0 win. She then hit her fifth homer of the year, a clutch shot in Game 2 that knotted the score at 5-all with one out in the bottom of the seventh. The Mt. Hood Community College transfer also scored the game-winning run in SOU’s 2-0 win Saturday against Concordia and legged out an RBI triple in the second game. SOU SWEEPS — The Southern Oregon University women’s softball team pounded out 18 hits and allowed only one run during a 5-1 and 5-0 non-conference sweep of Northwest Christian University on Wednesday. SOU (26-15) outfielder Leann Foster capped off Game 1 with a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning. Kara Ray was 3-for-3 on three bunt singles in the nightcap. Northwest Christian freshman Jenni Bittle, a former Crater High standout, gave up eight hits and suffered the loss in the opener.
