The long layoff hurt the offense but the Knights’ defense carried the load for a 40-30 victory over North Bend in a first-round Class 3A state-playoff game Tuesday. North Valley (17-8), the No. 2 seed from the Skyline Conference, travels to play third-ranked Philomath on Friday for a second-round game. The winner advances to the eight-team state tournament at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis. The Knights shot 16-for-43 for the game and had only 18 points at the half. "(North Bend) came out with a gimmick defense to slow down (Anthony) Spain and (Andy) Shannon," said North Valley coach Rob Boye, whose team has won 16 of its last 19 games. "They allowed us some good looks, we just couldn’t knock them down. "Luckily, we focused in on our defense a little." Advertisement Spain had six of North Valley’s 15 steals and the Knights forced 20 turnovers. North Bend, the Far West League’s No. 3 seed, scored in double figures in just one quarter — 10 points in the second period. But the game was still in doubt until a 16-8 burst in the fourth quarter sealed it for the Knights. "We survived to play another game," said Boye. "That’s what counts." Spain scored 13 points and Josh Makepeace had nine to lead North Valley. Shannon led the way with seven rebounds, and Quentin Tisch had four assists. CENTRAL 51, HENLEY 39 — At Monmouth, the Skyline Conference’s No. 3 seed, Henley, bowed out of the state playoffs to the Val-Co League runner-up. Henley finished the season with a 14-10 record. Justin Reynolds scored a game-high 24 points to lead Central, which advances to play at Far West champion Siuslaw in Florence on Friday in a second-round game. Joel Matchett scored 12 points and had seven rebounds to lead the Hornets.
