Count Annie Chaney among them. The recent North Medford High graduate and soon-to-be Southern Oregon University player handled the rising mercury and her opponents with equal aplomb Saturday morning and into the afternoon. Chaney overpowered Ashland’s Jessica Baker and Megan Roberts of Redding, Calif., by identical 6-1, 6-1 scores to blaze into today’s women’s open singles championship of the 28th- annual Big Al’s Tennis Tournament. Advertisement The second-seeded Chaney faces top-seeded Amy Brown of Palo Cedro, Calif., in a 9 a.m. final at Ashland’s Hunter Park. "I took June off," said the 5-foot-7 Chaney, who teamed with Shannon Leever to win the Class 4A state doubles championship at the end of May. "Then I started playing a couple weeks ago. ... I like playing when it’s hot. It makes me work harder." Chaney will no doubt have to work harder today, as she has lost to Brown in the semifinals each of the last two years. A summer ago, Brown recorded a 5-7, 7-6, 6-0 victory while Chaney battled stomach cramps. In 2001, Brown’s win went 7-6, 6-1. "I’m excited to play her again," said Chaney, 18, who was a quarterfinalist in her first Big Al’s appearance in 2000. Brown, the 2001 champion and runner-up last year, defeated Grants Pass’ Ruth Lopez, 6-2, 6-0, in Saturday’s other semifinal. Chaney made quick work of Roberts at the SOU courts, much to the approval of Gail Patten, her future head coach who was in attendance. Swinging a powerful righty forehand as she moved predominantly along the baseline, Chaney broke Roberts’ service in five of seven games and held her own serve all seven times. "I’m a baseliner," said Chaney, who also won a state doubles crown in 2001, when Leslie Schultz was her North Medford partner. "I’ve been playing since I was 4, and I could never volley. I started playing doubles two years ago and played more net and got really good at it, but I still prefer playing baseline." No need to tinker with what works. In other action Saturday, No. 1 seed Josh Prager, No. 2 Todd Stanley, No. 4 Tyler Wilson and unseeded Jordan Walker advanced to the men’s open singles semifinals. Prager, of Yuba City, Calif., and the two-time defending champion, needed three sets to survive Anton Talle in the Round of 16, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Prager then beat Thomas Morton, 6-0, 6-4. Wilson, who will be a senior at North Medford High, beat Jer-Wei Chang of Ashland, 6-0, 6-0, before downing Ashland’s Evan Schleining, 6-2, 6-2, in the quarterfinals. Walker and Stanley both won their quarterfinal matches in straight sets. Third-seeded Kevin Jones of Veradale, Wash., was upset by Walker in straight sets in the Round of 16. The men’s singles semifinals — with Prager facing Wilson and Stanley meeting Walker — begin at 8 a.m. and the finals start serving at 10 a.m. at Hunter Park.
