PREP ROUNDUP St. Mary's boys cruise by Pilots Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 15, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Oct. 15, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News CANYONVILLE — St. Mary’s took another step forward toward the District 5 boys soccer crown on Wednesday, securing a 6-0 triumph over third-place Canyonville Christian Academy with a strong effort on both sides of the pitch. The Crusaders (11-2, 10-0 Dist. 5) can lock up the league title Saturday when they square off against Cascade Christian (8-2, 8-1) at noon at U.S. Cellular Community Park. St. Mary’s stormed out to a 5-0 lead by halftime against the host Pilots (5-4-1, 5-4), with Alec Robertson opening the scoring on a free kick. Hunter Rothfus then scored off a crossing pass from Austin Pena and it later became 3-0 when Pena’s long throw in was knocked in for an own goal by Canyonville Christian. Luke Fry’s goal came after a header assist by Rothfus, and Weston Grant closed out the first-half scoring by going far post after receiving a pass from Bryce Parsons. St. Mary’s goalkeeper Ryan Trask turned away a penalty kick by the Pilots before Robertson tallied the final goal off a corner kick. Girls Soccer ST. MARY'S 6, LAKEVIEW 1 : At Lakeview, Emily Elmore and MaryBeth Barnum each had two goals and two assists for St. Mary's during District 5 action. Ibixia Alvarez and Sara Klott had the other goals for the Crusaders (10-2-1, 6-0 Dist. 5), who led 2-0 at halftime. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 2, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0, OT : At Cave Junction, Emily Stephens netted the go-ahead goal in the 96th minute to help lift Cascade Christian to the District 5 victory in overtime. She scored on a direct free kick. Erika Worthington added an insurance goal in the 100th for the Challengers (7-5, 4-1 Dist. 5). Lily Cusumano submitted a strong effort in goal for Illinois Valley (3-9, 0-6). Volleyball CRATER 3, CHURCHILL 1 : At Eugene, Crater got off to a slow start but ramped up quickly to earn the Midwestern League victory, 20-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-18. Junior opposite Nicole Morse had 19 digs, 11 kills and six aces and senior outside hitter Destiny Fahndrich added 13 digs, 15 kills and four aces for the Comets (11-7, 5-4 MWL). Outside hitter Tori Ianieri had 11 kills and senior setter Cassidy Layton dished out 41 assists to boost Crater.
