The man, who police have not yet identified, was arrested a short distance away from the vehicle, close to the intersection of Tenth and Manzanita streets across from Jewett Elementary School. The incident was reported at about 4:40 p.m., with calls to 911 for visible flames burning on the car, a red Chevy Malibu. Jackson County Fire District No. 3 responded to the scene, but police were able to extinguish the fire before firefighters arrived, officers at the scene said. Officers at the scene said reports of an assault at the scene were unfounded. No one was injured. Police would not comment on motives for the suspected incident.
