Scott Wayne Chitwood, 45, pleaded guilty Wednesday in Jackson County Circuit Court to a felony charge of second-degree robbery stemming from an incident Aug. 31 in which he took a woman's keys and attempted to steal her vehicle. Police said Chitwood opened the woman's car door and pointed a pellet gun resembling a real handgun at her. Chitwood then demanded that the woman give him her car. She gave Chitwood her keys, but Chitwood fled on foot after the woman screamed, spurring at least two witnesses to chase the suspect. Medford police arrived on scene within two minutes, according to archives. Chitwood was caught shortly after the robbery when he attempted to wade Bear Creek near the Ninth Street footbridge. He had hidden the pellet gun in a 12th Street dumpster, which a witness observed and reported to police. The victim attended the hearing but declined to make a statement to the court, according to the Jackson County District Attorney's Office. Jackson County Circuit Court Judge Lorenzo Mejia sentenced Chitwood to 70 months in prison and 3 years of post-prison supervision. Reach reporter Nick Morgan at 541-776-4471 or [email protected].
