The neighborhood has been referred to as "The Hollywood District." What is the history of this area and why was it given this name? — Colleen S., Medford Well, the nice folks at the Southern Oregon Historical Society were more than happy to provide an answer to your question, Colleen. While the exact reason why the area was named Hollywood wasn’t readily apparent, the orchard owner did have strong ties to Tinseltown (not the theater complex in Medford, by the way). Albert C. Allen started the orchard of mostly Comice pears in 1903 near the present Oak Grove School and ran it until 1914, according to his son, A.C. Allen Jr, whose memories are recorded on Oral History No. 124 at the historical society. An author and a former motion picture cameraman, the orchardist continued to dabble with his camera even after his move to Jackson County. Advertisement He filmed "Grace’s Visit to the Rogue River Valley," based on former actress Grace Fiero, who moved to this area.
