Officers had arrested his accomplice Monday morning without knowing the two were linked. Now both Jayson Lou Sauer, 30, and David Edward Anderson Jr., 33, face multiple charges including kidnapping and vehicle theft. Police claim that the two stole a red Chevy pickup truck from a Grants Pass Wal-Mart parking lot Sunday evening, then spent the night and early morning breaking into homes and vehicles around the county. They were driving down Southwest Laurel Street when they spotted a Chevy S-10 pickup running unattended in a driveway. Sauer jumped from the stolen red truck and got in the idling truck, Grants Pass police Lt. Joe Henner said. Sauer told police he drove for several blocks before he noticed a toddler strapped into the child-safety seat beside him. The truck’s owner, James Kay, had buckled in his 2-year-old daughter, Kayle Marie Kwiatkowski, then stepped back inside the house to get something he had forgotten, he told police. When he returned his truck and daughter were gone. Advertisement Police sent out an Amber Alert asking for public help in finding the girl and truck. They got a tip and later found the youngster safe in the abandoned pickup. As officers searched for the thief, one spotted the Chevy that had been reported stolen from Wal-Mart the day before pulling from a driveway nearby. They stopped the truck and approached with guns drawn, Henner said. The driver, Anderson, ran, but officers quickly caught and arrested him. Monday evening police tracked down Sauer at the same location where they had arrested Anderson. Investigators realized the two thefts were linked, then connected the two men with the series of other crimes that happened overnight, Henner said. Police don’t have a final tally of the vehicle and home break-ins, he said. Additional charges from those crimes will be added to the charges already filed against Sauer and Anderson. Sauer is charged with second-degree kidnapping, attempting to elude police, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, probation violation and two counts of unauthorized use of a vehicle. Anderson is charged with second-degree kidnapping, third-degree escape, probation violation and two counts of unauthorized use of a vehicle.
