Dunlap claims Pirates' all-time HR lead ROGUE RIVER -- Travis Dunlap's fifth-inning home run Saturday accomplished two things. With the two-run shot, Dunlap became the all-time home run leader at Phoenix High with 15. He had been tied with Drew Pierson, a 1999 graduate, at 14 before the start of the Pirates' Skyline Conference-opening doubleheader. The homer also awakened Phoenix's slumbering bats, opening the flood gates for an 18-9 win in the first game of a doubleheader sweep of Rogue River. The Pirates downed the Chieftains 17-1 in the five-inning nightcap. Rogue River jumped out to an 8-6 lead heading into the decisive fifth before Dunlap tied the game and then capped off the eight-run inning with a two-run double. "We didn't start hitting the ball until the fifth for some reason," said Phoenix coach Joe Hagler. "It was a really frustrating five innings." Landon Rhodes took the mound in the fifth with the Pirates trailing and held on for his first varsity win. "Landon did a great job," said Hagler. "He was very poised and only gave up the one run." Ryan Woodall and Ricky Shamblin had three hits apiece to lead Rogue River. Dunlap added to his career home run record in the nightcap with a grand slam and a two-run shot, leaving him with 12 RBIs in the two games. "Travis has a great baseball mind," said Hagler of his junior slugger who also picked up his third win on the mound. "He knew about the record coming into the game but didn't even mention it in the dugout. He just conducts himself really well out there." Bobby Dawson also smacked two homers for the Pirates (5-1, 2-0 Skyline) while Tyler McPhee added a two-run blast in the third. HIDDEN VALLEY 10-1, MAZAMA 4-15 -- At Klamath Falls, Hidden Valley stunned Mazama in the opener but couldn't muster the same outcome in the nightcap as the two teams split their Skyline Conference-opening doubleheader. Seth Pietsch had four hits and four RBIs to lead the Mustangs in the first game, including a two-run homer in the third that gave Hidden Valley a 6-0 lead. Ryan Wilson, Rob Adler, Scott Hyde and Paul Kennedy each added two hits for the Mustangs, while Jake Nelson had three hits in Game 1 for the Vikings. Mazama (1-4, 1-1 Skyline) regrouped to rout Hidden Valley in the five-inning nightcap, using a nine-run first inning to separate from the Mustangs. Jake Nelson had seven strikeouts and added three hits of his own to boost Mazama, which also got four RBIs from Jayson Nelson and three from Eric McDaniel in Game 2. NORTH VALLEY 8-15, ILLINOIS VALLEY 3-1 -- At Cave Junction, North Valley took a while to get going but once the Knights did they couldn't slow down in sweeping a Skyline Conference doubleheader. North Valley trailed 1-0 heading into the fourth inning of Game 1 before scoring seven runs over the next three innings to pull away from IV. The Knights (5-1, 2-0 Skyline) roughed up the Cougars with 10 runs in the third inning of the five-inning nightcap. Luke Godfrey and Justin Sullivan had multiple hits in both games, while Scott Butterbaugh held the Cougars to three hits in the nightcap.
