Medford Fire-Rescue and Jackson County Fire District 3 battled the fire for approximately two hours at a two-story warehouse located at 640 Mason Way. The fire broke out at 6 p.m. Friday, according to Fire District 3 spokeswoman Ashley Lara. The building houses several businesses, but the fire was concentrated in the Oregon Vineyard Supply warehouse, Lara said. The business offers growers' supplies and agronomic services as well as vineyard development and management services, according to its website. Medford Fire-Rescue was first to arrive on scene, Lara said, and a District 3 battalion chief was close behind. The northwest Medford location was only roughly 100 yards into Fire District 3's jurisdiction, with the boundary being at Sage Road. Pacific Power shut off power to the warehouse by 7:15 p.m. Lara said firefighters employed a defensive attack to keep the fire from spreading, which involved sawing open large roll-up metal doors to extinguish the blaze. Nearly two dozen firefighters from District 3 and Medford Fire-Rescue battled the flames as black smoke poured from the structure at about 8 p.m. Six engines and four other emergency vehicles responded to the fire. The fire was knocked down by 8:15 p.m., and the first hazardous materials team arrived about 8:30 p.m., Lara said. As of 9 p.m., investigators were waiting for approval from local hazmat teams to complete inspection of the building. Lara said firefighters still don't know where the fire originated. Investigators would likely have a better idea of the fire's origin point and cause by Saturday morning, she said. —Reach reporter Nick Morgan at 541-776-4471 or [email protected].
