Do you treat the cyclists as a pedestrian at a crosswalk and stop your vehicle so they can cross, or drive on, letting them wait until the coast is clear? — Jackie H., Ashland . Good question, Jackie. Sometimes it’s hard to figure out whether cyclists are vehicles or pedestrians because they often act as both on the road. Ashland has posted several crosswalks as "bike Xings", including the one on East Main near the police station. Advertisement Basically, bikes are to be treated the same as pedestrians when they are in crosswalks, says Sgt. Teresa Selby of the Ashland Police Department. But she notes that the cyclist can’t pedal the through a crosswalk at a speed faster than an ordinary walk. In other words, a cyclist can’t come along at a high speed on a bike path and expect traffic to come to a screeching halt as he or she flashes through.
