Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend November 1, 2005 %%$$cutline$$%% Found baby becomes special delivery By SANNE SPECHT Mail Tribune A delivery truck driver dropped an unexpected package at LaDonna Duill’s home late Friday afternoon — a lost and distraught 2-year-old toddler. "When I asked him what he had for me, I sure didn’t expect him to say ‘a baby,’" said the retired teacher. Ryan Frost was following his usual United Parcel Service route along the South Fork of Little Butte Creek Road outside Eagle Point when something caught his eye in the dusky rain — a shivering, sobbing, shoeless little boy. "He was halfway down in the ditch," said Frost, 29. "He was hysterical. It was starting to get dark." Frost stopped his truck, climbed down to get the crying child and was met with a hero’s welcome. Advertisement "He ran right up to me and grabbed on to me," said Frost. "He was shivering to death." The toddler was unable to tell Frost who he was or where he lived. So Frost wrapped him in his UPS jacket and tried to call emergency services about his roadside rescue. Unable to make a connection on his cell phone, he drove down the next driveway. "That’s when I learned it’s not only storks that bring babies," said Duill. Duill said she quickly realized the toddler must be the youngest son of Jeanne and Mike Wyant. She sent her husband to get the child’s grandparents. "(The Wyants) live up the road and the grandparents live just across the road," said Duill. Back at the Wyants’, Jeanne says she and her husband were enduring a parent’s worst nightmare. Michael, the youngest of their three children, had suddenly disappeared around 3 p.m. "It was a classic moment of one minute your child is there, and the next he’s gone," said Wyant. Wyant said the family had been preparing for a weekend vacation when Michael slipped out of her husband’s sight, down the driveway and onto the road. "He’s a classic, mischievous, active 2-year-old," said Wyant. "But he’s very shy. He doesn’t talk to strangers." Wyant, in town running errands with their 4-year-old child, says her heart stopped when her husband called. "He’d already called 9-1-1," said Jeanne Wyant. "He was panicking. Running around outside. Panicking. Called the in-laws. The three of them were running around outside. Panicking." She raced home to an empty house — and a phone message that sheriff’s deputies were on the way. "I called them back and they told me he was at the neighbors," said Wyant. "UPS had found him on the road." Between natural and man-made hazards, Duill said the family was lucky to have a happy ending to this story "We have cougars, bears, everything out here," said Duill. "And the cars go 50 to 55 miles an hour. He was in the biggest danger of getting hit by a car or falling into the drainage ditch or Little Butte Creek and drowning." Frost, a father of four, said he’s glad he found the boy quickly. "I have a 4-year-old daughter," said Frost. "I couldn’t picture her ..." Wyant says the family knows exactly how lucky they were. "I keep going over and over all the possible scenarios in my mind," said Wyant. "I’m just glad. ... We thank God that there are still people like (Frost) in the world."
