Timber Products will appeal the decision to the state Land Use Board of Appeals, said Eric Vos, the company's business analyst. The development, which will include a shopping center, office space and light industrial buildings, is proposed for the former site of the Medco lumber mill complex near the intersection of state highways 62, 99 and 238. Developers say it will take about 10 years to build. Two wood products manufacturers adjacent to the land have asked the city to reject the proposal. Representatives of Timber Products and SierraPine say open-air boutiques and restaurants are not compatible with their existing manufacturing activities, which generate noise, dust, fumes, truck traffic and round-the-clock activity. They also have expressed concern that the zone change eliminates some of the city's most valuable industrial land. Vos said that in addition to appealing the zone change, Timber Products would appeal the approval of an amendment to the city's comprehensive plan that cleared the way for the zone change. The mill previously filed an appeal in October of an economic report calling for a reduction of industrial-zoned land and an increase in commercial-zoned land.
