The Challengers (21-2) won, 25-9, 25-7, 25-11, to claim top seeding heading into the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs, which begin Oct. 31. They have only lost to Creswell (23-0) this fall. Against the Crusaders, Claire Hawkins had nine kills and Caroline McMahon four kills and six aces. Cascade Christian, which had already wrapped up the SCL regular-season title, dominated the service line with 18 aces. Madi Christensen had four kills and two blocks and was 4 of 4 serving for St. Mary’s (12-12). In a 25-7, 25-12, 25-8 semifinal victory over Illinois Valley, Hawkins recorded 11 kills, Ellie Brown 10 kills and Alyssa Brown 19 assists. Allison Winter was 20-for-21 serving with nine aces. St. Mary's beat Lakeview, 26-24, 25-23, 25-15, in the other semifinal. Christensen recorded 19 kills and three aces and Hallie Shean three kills and four aces. Mackenzie Addington was 22-for-22 serving with three aces. MVL DISTRICT: At Bend, Butte Falls claimed the final automatic state berth with a third-place finish in the Mountain Valley League district tournament at Trinity Lutheran High. Butte Falls (12-7) edged Triad, 25-17, 26-24, 19-25, 23-25, 15-9, before falling to Trinity Lutheran, 25-20, 25-11, 25-8. The first round of the Class 1A state playoffs are Oct. 28. Water Polo ASHLAND SWEEPS: At Cottage Grove, Ashland’s boys team swept four matches and the girls team scored a pair of victories to cap an undefeated weekend tournament. Ashland beat South Albany 12-8 and Marist 14-6 on Friday, then returned to the pool Saturday for a 14-4 win over North Eugene and 11-5 win over Cottage Grove. Ashland’s Devon Lancaster combined for 10 goals, six assists and six steals in the four victories, while goalie Vincent Wright totaled 45 blocks and also managed eight assists and one goal. Finn Griffin added five goals, 12 steals and five assists in Saturday’s sweep. For the Ashland girls, Amelia Covert Zeve scored 19 goals in two matches with three assists and three steals and goalie Izzy Nicolier totaled 19 blocks. Marta Quesada Alonso and Zee Harrison each netted three goals as the Grizzlies won 17-6 over South Albany on Friday and 13-10 over Cottage Grove on Saturday. MEDFORD COMPETES: At Eugene, the Medford boys went 2-3 and the girls 0-3-1 at Amazon Pool Friday and Saturday. On the boys side Saturday, South Eugene won, 11-1, before Medford beat Churchill/Springfield 8-3. In the win, Carter Hazen scored three goals and goalkeeper Chris Ball had 12 saves. In a 12-4 loss to Willamette, Cyrus Christianson scored three goals. On Friday, South Eugene won, 10-0, before Medford beat Sheldon, 15-10. Micah Mills recorded seven goals in the triumph. In girls Saturday, South Eugene beat Medford, 12-4. In Medford’s 14-10 loss to Willamette, Vanessa Babb scored five goals and Marissa Drake had three goals. On Friday, Medford and South Eugene finished in an 8-8 tie, with Tori Kelly and Babb each submitting three goals. In Sheldon’s 8-3 win over Medford, Drake went for two goals.
