SINCE YOU ASKED Since You Asked: TV sound delay has other explanations Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 16, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 16, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News I've been mystified for a long time about something. How is it that two TVs tuned to the same cable station in adjacent rooms can be out of phase or out of sync? Is there a theory of slow electrons to explain this? — Roger M., Medford Super Bowl parties would last a lot longer if broadcasts worked through such a theory, Roger. Although it takes a certain amount of time for cameras to send live footage to your home, it's a not-perceptible amount — it's in the milliseconds for feeds across the world. Less so for electronic signals traveling between living room, bedroom and kitchen. That's not to say what you're watching is "live." Particularly since 2004, when the phrase "wardrobe malfunction" entered popular culture, award ceremonies, sporting events and events televised live use a seven-second delay. Computerized TV delay technology has been around since 1977, when the Eventide corporation first introduced a system designed in part to bleep censored words. But why is there a delay between TVs tuned to the same channel, or radios tuned to the same station? Part of the answer may involve the acoustics of your home. Sound only travels at 1,126 feet per second, after all, and a room's shape and the materials inside it can affect the sound. Other explanations involve your home entertainment system. If you have a television with motion filter settings, there might be a delay of as much as a 10th of a second to process the signal. The most likely explanation, however, may be your digital video recorder. Even on the DVR's "live" setting, that ability to pause and rewind live television involves the broadcast signal recording to a hard drive and playing back the recording. The lag can be noticeable if you've got another TV nearby not connected to a hard drive. — Send questions to “Since You Asked,” Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O.
