Pirates top Panthers, continue early streak PHOENIX -- The Phoenix High softball team is beginning to look like one of the best Class 3A squads in the state. Freshman Tiffany Ross fired a five-hitter and sophomore Kendra Kohler went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs as the Pirates drubbed South Medford 10-1 at Hagler-James Park. The victory was the third over a Class 4A school for the Pirates and raised their overall record to 5-0. "We're solid at every position," Phoenix coach Rich Ficek said. "We've got some young kids in our lineup, but they've played a lot of ball, and they play well under pressure." The game was tied 1-1 after 2 innings when the Pirates exploded for five runs to take the lead for good. Consecutive RBI singles by Ross, Kohler, Sutton Jackson and Meagan Capp accounted for three runs, another scored on Chelsea Clark's sacrifice bunt and the final run came home on Courtney Lucas' single. Ross, meanwhile, logged eight strikeouts and just one walk as she improved her record to 5-0. Lucas, Ross and Beth Nikodym all had two hits. ROGUE RIVER 10, ASHLAND 0 -- Jamie Artoff fashioned a two-hit shutout and Lacey Mack went 3-for-3 at the plate as Rogue River breezed past Ashland in the non-league game. The host Chieftains scored eight runs on five hits in the second inning. K.K. Smith and Kristi Frederick each added two hits for the Chiefs, who improved to 4-0 on the season and meet another unbeaten team -- Phoenix -- in their Skyline Conference opener Saturday.
