Torres, fighting in the 201-pound open division, raised his career record to 45-13 with a 16-2 triumph over Jonathan Ortiz of Orlando, Fla. At one point, Ortiz needed a standing eight count when Torres lifted him off the canvas with an uppercut. Torres is 6-foot-4, and the 5-9 Ortiz tried to go in low and slip under the former's punches when he got caught. "Javier was using the outside and the angles and using his reach and just pummeled this guy," said trainer Jim Pedrojetti. Torres, 18, who hasn't won a national title in five years, meets James Zimmerman tonight. Zimmerman, of San Jose, Calif., is ranked second nationally by USA Boxing. "Tomorrow's a big day," said Pedrojetti. "The guy's left-handed, and Javier should be able to use his reach." A victory in this tournament will qualify Torres for the Olympic Trials.
