"We have 350 known veterans buried here," says Friends of Jacksonville's Historic Cemetery President Dirk Siedlecki, who will be among the volunteers dotting graves with flags over the Memorial Day weekend. "We have veterans even from the War of 1812 through the Civil War, Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Sadly, we're well represented." From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday and Monday, May 24-25, volunteers will help family and friends find the grave sites of people buried in the historic cemetery located at the top of Cemetery Road. The event is one of several tributes to veterans scheduled in Jackson County to honor veterans and current military members. Siedlecki says it can be difficult to find graves at the cemetery, which opened in 1859. It remains an active cemetery, accepting the remains of the recently deceased. Volunteers have access to paper and computer records on grave sites. Many people travel long distances to visit graves at the cemetery, he says. "It's very rewarding for us the volunteers. We're usually able to find all the graves people are looking for. It's a good feeling to be able to help them," Siedlecki says. He encouraged members of the public who don't have relatives or friends buried at the cemetery to visit as well. "We invite people to stop by and pay their respect to our veterans and the men and women still on active duty," he says. "Memorial Day is a special day to recognize them." Siedlecki says volunteers have been helping visitors find graves on Memorial Day for years. The volunteers continue to find out new information about the people buried at the cemetery — and to add to the count of identified veterans. "We'll have more flags available. We always find veterans without a military marker," he says. Other Jackson County Memorial Day events honoring veterans include: Rep. Greg Walden and Russ McBride will speak during the annual Fallen War Heroes Commemoration at 9 a.m. Monday, May 25, at Don Jones Memorial Park, located near the intersection of Hamrick Road and New Haven Road, Central Point. American Legion Post 14, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 353, Boy Scout Troop 112, the Valley of the Rogue New Horizons Band, Southern Oregon University musicians and the Ashland High School Choir will hold a ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Mountain View Cemetery, 440 Normal Ave., Ashland. Speakers Walden, Sen. Ron Wyden and Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center & Clinics Interim Director Barbara Oemcke, bag pipe players, the Oregon National Guard and the Marine Corps League Honor Guard are among the participants at an 11 a.m. Monday ceremony at the Eagle Point National Cemetery, 2763 Riley Road, Eagle Point. Flyovers by local aircraft also are planned.
