By Sam Wheeler MailTribune.com By Sam Wheeler Posted Dec. 16, 2010 @ 12:01 am Updated Dec 16, 2010 at 2:50 AM By Sam Wheeler Posted Dec. 16, 2010 @ 12:01 am Updated Dec 16, 2010 at 2:50 AM » Social News A 14-year-old male pedestrian was hit by a car while crossing Riverside Avenue near Rogue Community College in Medford Wednesday afternoon, police said. Kathleen R. Warren, 57, of the 3000 block of Glendrove Avenue, was driving a red Jeep Cherokee in the center lane on Riverside when she struck the pedestrian in the crosswalk at Ninth Street. Police did not release the name of the teen, and an official report on his medical condition was unavailable. Police said that the boy suffered a slight injury to his head and a more serious leg injury. One of the boy's shoes was laying several feet away from him in the street as EMTs treated him before transporting him to a Medford hospital. Police said some witnesses, including Warren, said the boy was jogging, and "startled them," when he entered the crosswalk traveling west. A motorist in the left-hand lane, closest to where the boy entered the crosswalk, slammed on his brakes as the boy entered the street, as did a driver in a car in the far-right lane. But Warren said she did not see the boy until it was too late. "He came jogging out in front of me," Warren said with tears in her eyes. "I'm a preschool teacher, I'm suppose to make sure kids are safe and for this to have happened is just killing me," she said. Medford police said a decision on issuing a citation was awaiting further investigation. RCC officials complained to the city in 2008 about the danger Medford's traffic coordinating committee reviewed and eventually approved RCC's request in Dec. 2008, which was to move the crosswalk crossing Riverside from the north side of Ninth to the south side of the street, so pedestrians could avoid cars turning from Ninth onto Riverside. Medford police officer Greg Nichols said that the area of Riverside running beside RCC is of great concern for the Police Department's traffic team. Police have conducted numerous pedestrian enforcement actions at the crosswalks in that area, he said.
