Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 30, 2005 Deputies catch suspects in Sams Valley robbery The brothers suspected of robbing the Rainey’s Corner Market in Sams Valley at gunpoint last weekend were arrested Thursday night. Sheriff’s deputies discovered the fugitives hiding out in the Heppsie Mountain area on Highway 140 near milepost 18, officials said. Deputies received an anonymous call Thursday morning informing them of the brothers’ location. Sheriff Mike Winters deployed a helicopter for air surveillance. Deputies searched the area for around eight hours, finally locating the pair at around 6:30 p.m. Mark Bradley Nelson, 36, and Randall Dean Nelson, 39, were lodged in the Jackson County Jail on charges of first-degree robbery, first-degree kidnapping and second-degree robbery. Both were held in lieu of $150,000 bail. Police were unavailable for comment on the reasons for the kidnapping charge. Sheriff’s deputies said the suspects appeared at the store at around 8:30 p.m. Saturday night and pointed a semi-automatic handgun at an employee near the store’s gas pumps. They demanded the employee give them the till, officials said. Advertisement The suspects sped off in a car toward the Sams Valley area. Police found the car abandoned at the 3900 block of Old Sams Valley Highway. They searched the area the next day, but failed to locate the suspects, officials said. Both were charged with three Measure 11 crimes that carry mandatory minimum sentences. If convicted of first-degree robbery they face a mandatory sentence of seven years and four months in prison. First-degree kidnapping carries a mandatory seven years and six months prison sentence; second-degree robbery carries a mandatory five years and 10 months prison sentence. Oregon State Police assisted sheriff’s deputies in the arrest, officials said.
