Jackson County Marine Patrol deputies will conduct their annual dry-dock exams Saturday and Sunday, then again on Feb. 14-15, at the Jackson County Marine Patrol office, 620 Antelope Road, White City. The exams will be done from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Coast Guard Auxiliary representatives will also be on hand to do their inspections for those traveling in Coast Guard-patrolled waters, county marine patrol deputy Tom Turk says. Deputies also will be steering boaters toward ways to qualify for their boater-education cards, which are mandatory this year for all boaters under 40 while motoring crafts with motors of 10 horsepower or greater, Turk says. "We’ll be dispensing information on everything that everybody wants and needs," he says. Advertisement These inspections are a chance for boaters in Jackson County to ensure they have all the necessary legal and safety equipment required while boating on Oregon waterways this year. But the beauty of the dry-dock inspections is that they give anglers and other boaters a chance to get their inspections out of the way now instead of being stopped on the water for a lengthy inspection later this year. Also, any missing safety or registration items don’t translate into expensive tickets as they would if the boat is in the water. Boaters should bring their boats and all the required safety and registration materials as if they were about to launch for a day on the water, deputies said. Boats that pass will have a red inspection sticker affixed to the hull. Those who cannot make the dry-dock inspections can set up a free appointment during which a Jackson County Marine Patrol deputy will inspect their boats at home. The at-home inspections can be scheduled now through March 15. For appointments or for more information, call the marine patrol office at 541-826-5548. Oregon bear hunters have until Tuesday night to apply for spring bear tags. The applications are at point-of-sale licensing agents across the state, with hunters vying for almost 6,000 tags available to shoot black bears during specific limited-entry hunts this spring. The spring black bear hunt includes the Southwest Oregon hunt that sports 2,500 available tags, the most ever offered in the region. With only 1,390 applicants last year, anyone who applies for one of these tags is expected to get it because the spring bear hunters have yet to eclipse the available tags. The Southwest Oregon hunt is like most of the hunts, opening April 15 and running through May 31. That time period is also the same season for spring turkey hunting. The spring season has lost favor among sport-hunters who used to run their hounds on bears. With hounding and baiting outlawed for bear-hunting in 1993, effort and success in the spring season have sagged. But the Southwest Oregon hunt remains the cornerstone of the spring season, with by far the most tags and hunters of all the available spring hunts in Oregon.
