COLLEGE SOFTBALL Northwest Christian sweeps by Raiders EUGENE — Shaky defense prevented the Southern Oregon University softball team from closing in on a postseason berth Tuesday as Northwest Christian made the Raiders pay for eight errors with 8-0 and 3-2 wins at James Park. Six of the Beacons' runs were unearned, including all three in Game 2, helping them improve to 9-22 overall and 8-12 in the Cascade Conference. Jill Suratt tossed a three-hit shutout in an opener that lasted six innings, and Randi Koster's double broke a fifth-inning tie in Game 2 to give Suratt a second win. Sydney White was a tough-luck loser for the Raiders (12-14, 7-11) despite a dominant outing of her own in the nightcap. She punched out 10, walked one and held NCU to five hits while allowing no earned runs for the third start this season. NCU got White down in the first when Suratt's two-out grounder was mishandled and allowed two Beacons to come home. Julia Willison tied it with a fourth-inning double that scored Alexa Gonzalez and Sulie Augustine, who had reached with a double and a single. Bre Johnson got on via error, though, to lead off the Beacon fifth. She eventually scored on Kostner's game-winning double. SOU committed five errors in Game 1 and Parker Bonife went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Gabby Stover added an RBI double and went 4-for-7 on the day. Augustine paced the Raiders with three hits, while Willison and Gonzalez had two apiece. NCU, which had never swept SOU, won three of four in the season series. With 10 regular season contests remaining, the Raiders still have a four-game lead on NCU and Corban for the fourth and final spot in the Cascade Conference Championships. SOU will play its final regular season home games Friday against Concordia (2 p.m., 4 p.m.) and Saturday against Northwest (11 a.m., 1 p.m.) at University Field.
