South proves to be its own worst enemy SALEM - South Medford ended the girls soccer season in a difficult fashion Tuesday. The Southern Oregon Conference champions surrendered an own goal at the 25th minute for the only score during a 1-0 loss to South Salem in a Class 4A third-round state playoff game. The Panthers completed the season with a 13-3-1 record, while the Saxons advance to the round of 16 against Westview, which defeated Putnam 2-0. South Salem converted when a corner kick went off the back of a Panther defender into the net. "It's a tough way to lose," South Medford coach Buzz Thielemann said. "They (South Salem) played a great defensive game. We had a hard time getting through their defense." Erin Reno's shot off the crossbar midway through the second half was South Medford's best scoring opportunity. South Salem, the No. 2 team from the Valley League, had an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal. "They had better possession of the ball," said Thielemann. "A lot of times they were distributing the ball better than we were today." South Medford junior goalkeeper Sarah Bryan kept the Panthers close. "She had the game of her life," said Thielemann. "They had some strong shots on goal and she stopped them all. She was at the right place at the right time." Brittany Quinowski played a particularly effective game on the defensive end for South. TUALATIN 3, NORTH MEDFORD 1 - At Tualatin, North Medford had its season come to an end with a loss in the second round of the state playoffs. The Black Tornado, which defeated Wilson 2-0 in a first-round game on Saturday, finished the season at 10-4. LA GRANDE 2, NORTH VALLEY 1, OT - At La Grande, North Valley's season comes to a close after a first-round state-tournament loss to La Grande in overtime. The Knights, a 5-0 winner over Cascade on Saturday in a sub-tournament game, finish the season at 10-5-2. La Grande, the top seed from the Greater Oregon League, moves on to face Marist on Saturday. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, BROOKINGS-HARBOR 2 , Shootout - At Brookings, Victoria Cotta provided Cascade Christian with the winning goal in the Class 3A/2A/1A girls second-round state playoff match. Cascade Christian (9-3-1) will host Blanchet, a 1-0 winner over Valley Catholic, in the quarterfinals Saturday at Hawthorne Park. Cotta, the Challengers' fifth shooter, made the winning shot on a low kick just inside the post after the Bruins' fifth shooter tied the shootout at 2-2. Cascade's first two shooters - Kyala Zielke and Crystal Humphries - converted their attempts, while Brookings made its first but had the second attempt bounce off the side post. Challenger junior goalkeeper Jennesa Collette stopped the Bruins' third and fourth shots, but the Cascade missed their attempts. The teams played to a scoreless overtime after the game ended 2-2 in regulation. Brookings took the initial lead at the 16th minute, but Cotta made a penalty kick to send the game into halftime tied at 1-1. Cascade took the lead nine minutes into the second half on a goal by junior midfielder Carrie Longan. Longan received a pass at midfield, dribbled to the right side and hit a shot into the upper V near the far post from 30 yards. A defensive mistake by the Challengers led to the Bruins' tying goal at the 52nd minute. Cascade Christian received outstanding performances from junior forward Jessica Tresser and junior midfielder Mary O'Brian. Boys KLAMATH UNION 1, WEST LINN 0 - At Klamath Falls, Luis Garcia scored the only goal for Klamath Union during the Pelicans Class 4A state playoff win. Klamath Union will play at Southridge, a 2-1 winner over Sheldon, in Saturday's quarterfinals . Garcia broke up a scoreless tie with his goal in the eighth minute. Three other KU goals were called off during the contest. LA GRANDE 3, ST. MARY'S 1 - At La Grande, Thatcher Jones scored the lone goal for St. Mary's (10-7) in a state-playoff loss to La Grande. La Grande took a 2-0 lead into the half on goals in the 25th and 35th minutes before Jones answered from about 20 yards out in the second half. But La Grande added an insurance goal three minutes later to end the Crusaders' season. Seniors Joel Frank, Jordan Frankel, Peter Staver and Jones all played well despite the loss.
