After riveting efforts in each of the past two Class 4A boys state tournaments in Portland, the 6-foot-6, 200-pound senior has been named first-team all-state in the 4A ranks. South Medford junior point guard Ryan Fiegi earned honorable mention and was the only other SOC boy recognized. For the girls, Roseburg senior wing Jori Grady got a spot on the second team, Ashland senior post Marla Morin made her way onto the third team and North Medford senior post Kerstin Mellbye received honorable mention. Mahr, the SOC boys player of the year, averaged 14.6 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists and three blocks per game during the regular season. And he was just getting started. In the postseason, Mahr propelled the Cavemen past Grant with a career-high 27 points in a third-round state-playoff contest. Once at Portland’s Memorial Coliseum, Mahr produced lines of 12 points, nine rebounds, five assists, three blocks and three steals in a first-round loss to Clackamas; a new career-high 30 points, 11 rebounds, five blocks and three assists in a consolation victory over Lincoln; and 20 points and eight rebounds in a season-ending loss to South Salem. For his efforts at state, Mahr was a second-team tournament selection as GP finished 21-7 overall. "I think people, after last year’s tournament, kind of forgot about him," says Cavemen head coach Bill Cowell, recalling Mahr’s tournament-record total shooting of 18-for-22 (81.8 percent) from the field during GP’s fourth-place run at state in 2002. "I think (his performance this year) cemented (first-team honors) for him. ... All-around, I don’t think there’s a question he was the best post up there. He can just do so many different things, especially defensively." Before Mahr, Ian Elseth, in 2001, was the last Caveman named to the all-state first team. But after April 5 — when Mahr will play for the Oregon contingent against Washington in the Northwest Shootout at the University of Portland’s Chiles Center (Mazama point guard Levell Hesia is the only other Southern Oregon representative for both the boys and girls) — Mahr’s competitive basketball playing days are likely done. A wide receiver and safety, he has signed to play football at Northern Arizona University starting in the fall. The 6-4, 165-pound Fiegi helped South Medford to its second straight SOC crown and a 22-3 overall season in the junior’s first varsity campaign. Grady, the SOC girls player of the year, did it all in leading Roseburg to a 22-4 mark and its first outright conference title since 1987. Morin, 6-1, produced 18 points and 9.9 rebounds per outing during the regular season. She powered Ashland to a 19-9 record and a state-tournament appearance. Mellbye, 6-2, accumulated 17.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per game as North Medford went 15-10.
