Fire call Brush fire — Medford firefighters on Friday afternoon battled a brush fire from the Rogue Valley Mall parking lot. At 3:33 p.m., the Medford Fire Department received a call of a small fire just east of the mall, in a wooded area between Bear Creek and Interstate 5. The fire grew to about one-half acre, and firefighters became concerned that smoke from the blaze would block the vision of drivers on I-5, Battalion Chief Kurt Bennett said. Crews hooked up an engine to a water hydrant in the mall parking lot. Firefighters sprayed water across the creek, and were able to get the fire under control in about 15 minutes, Bennett said. A crew in a smaller vehicle then drove to the fire and completely extinguished the flames, Bennett said.
