Email Story to a Friend July 2, 2006 The Man of Steel, and ink Comic books — remember them? If you grew up in the dark ages preceding Xbox, you may actually have read one or two while home sick from school. The Superman canon grows larger every year, as more and more creators seek to leave their stamp on an American icon. Here are a few of the more controversial takes on the character. All are published by D.C. Comics: "Superman: Red Son" (right) written by Mark Millar and illustrated by Dave Johnson and Kilian Plunkett (160 pages, $17.99). This is an alternate history that asks what would have happened had Superman's escape pod landed on a Soviet collective farm in the Ukraine. The book had comrade Kal-El embracing national Socialism and becoming the weapon Stalin needed to tip the balance of the Cold War in favor of Mother Russia. He used his strength and speed to topple the United States — with its president, Lex Luthor, and first lady, Lois Lane. "Kingdom Come," written by Mark Waid and illustrated by Alex Ross (228 pages, $14.99). "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns," by Frank Miller (224 pages, $14.99). "Superman For all Seasons," — written by Jeph Loeb and illustrated by Tim Sale (206 pages, $18). "Lex Luthor: Man of Steel," written by Brian Azzarello and illustrated by Lee Bermejo (144 pages, $12.99).
