The result was a 2-2 tie with nonconference foe Thurston of the Midwestern League. "We were up 2-0 at the beginning," said Comets coach Chris Gallegos, "then we basically fell apart. But it’s the preseason, so I can deal with that now." A year ago, Crater knocked off the Colts, 3-0, in the first round of the playoffs for the school’s first postseason win. In this one, the Comets were hampered by the absence of three starters who were either injured or had other commitments. Advertisement "We played them tough," said Gallegos. "We just have some guys who are working through some bugs and, hopefully, by the time conference starts (Sept. 23), we’ll be ready to go." Mike Scales put Crater on the scoreboard 10 minutes in, cleaning up a goal kick by Tomas Iboa. Twenty minutes later, Fernando Jaurez took a cross from Chris Venables and made it 2-0. Thurston tallied just before halftime, then knotted the match midway through the second half. Gallegos singled out senior Logan Hurst, a left-side defender. "He did a really good job and hustled and made a lot of things happen for us," said the coach. "He really stepped it up today." Crater, 2-1-1, outshot Thurston, 28-25, and had eight corner kicks to the Colts’ one. SOUTH MEDFORD 7, WOODBURN 1 — At Woodburn, junior Shane Holiday came off the bench to spark third-ranked South Medford (4-0). Holiday contributed two goals and two assists during a 11-minute span in the first half when the Panthers scored four goals. Woodburn opened the scoring in the fourth minute, but South answered 30 seconds later on a Josh Williams goal off an assist by Corey O’Neill. O’Neill began the Panthers’ blitz off an assist from Holiday at the 22nd minute. Then Holiday scored the next two goals and assisted on another O’Neill goal to give South a 5-1 halftime lead. Williams and Eric Connors accounted for South’s second-half goals. CANBY 3, NORTH MEDFORD 1 — At Canby, junior striker Luis Cabrera drilled a 15-yard goal four minutes into the match to give North Medford a quick lead, but Canby rallied to win the nonconference match. The victory was costly for the Cougars, however, as junior forward Josh Enyart suffered a broken right leg after colliding with Black Tornado goalkeeper Oscar Benitez. The injury occurred as Benitez slid for the ball and Enyart ran into his shin guard. The match was delayed for 30 minutes before paramedics removed Enyart from the field on a stretcher. Canby tied the match on Mitch Hipp’s corner kick with two minutes remaining in the first half, then went ahead for good on Brandon Porter’s 18-yard bullet 10 minutes into the second half. North Medford coach Rich Garcia praised the efforts of Benitez and Cabrera, who has been suffering from a hamstring injury. MARSHFIELD 2, ASHLAND 1 — At Coos Bay, Casey Murdock scored the winning goal in the 62nd minute. Fabian Garcia tied the score for Ashland (1-3) five minutes before halftime after Marshfield took the initial lead. MAZAMA 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 — At Klamath Falls, brothers Jose and Eve Melgoza each tallied a goal for Mazama (1-1, 1-0 Skyline). The Vikings led 2-0 at halftime. Oscar Herrera accounted for Mazama’s other score. The Vikings outshot Illinois Valley, 32-5. NORTH VALLEY AT HENLEY — The game was not played because of a scheduling mix-up. Details about when or if the game will be played were unclear. ST. MARY’S 8, ROSEBURG JV 0 — At Roseburg, Sean Snider had three goals and an assist and Michael Staver two goals and three assists for St. Mary’s in the nonconference game. The Crusaders (3-0 overall), also got unassisted scores from Chris Burwell and Matt Bladek to open a 2-0 lead in the first three minutes. Austin Grant tallied the other goal for St. Mary’s, and Duncan MacDiarmid registered an assist.
