A California woman who was a passenger in the car was killed in the accident. Mail Tribune / Jim Craven Passenger killed in I-5 collision A California woman died Tuesday afternoon after the car she was riding in smashed into a parked semi-trailer on Interstate 5 just north of the California border. Investigators have yet to determine why the 2001 Nissan Pathfinder driven by Walter H. Mullikin, 82, of Penn-Valley, Calif., drifted onto the right northbound shoulder of the freeway before crashing into the semi. Marie S. Mullikin, 82, was ejected from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband was air-ifted by a Mercy Flights helicopter to Providence Medical Center in Medford. He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Oregon State Police officials said in a news release. The semi’s driver had pulled to the shoulder near milepost 4 and was in the sleeper berth when the Nissan crashed into the back of the trailer. The driver was not injured. The impact peeled the Nissian’s passenger side away, leaving the freeway littered with glass and debris. Oregon Department of Transportation crews reduced traffic to one lane for about 3.5 hours during the cleanup and investigation. OSP are still investigating if the couple were wearing safety belts at the time of the crash. The Nissan’s airbags deployed upon impact, OSP said. OSP Sgt. Mark Byrd said police did not locate any witnesses to the crash and would like for anyone with information to call 541-776-6236. OSP troopers from the Central Point Area Command office are continuing the investigation. They were assisted at the scene by Jackson County Fire District 5 crews.
