Hagler flip-flopped his pitching rotation, moving No. 2 starter Richard Goosmann into the first game, and the change worked to perfection. The slender, left-handed Goosmann tossed a gem as Phoenix captured a 1-0 victory in the opener, then staff ace Brady Rhodes handcuffed the Hornets on three hits during a 14-3 win to complete the sweep. "You never go over there thinking sweep until after you win the first one," said Hagler. "Anytime you sweep Henley in Klamath Falls it’s a great day. Our kids responded real well." Advertisement None more than Goosmann. He pitched a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts to run his record to 3-1 on the season. "He (Goosmann) spotted the ball pretty well for the most part," said Hagler. "He was throwing his curveball for strikes so they couldn’t sit on anything. He had a lot of poise for a first-year varsity kid." The Pirates scored the game’s only run in the sixth inning. Kevin Hudnall led off with a walk and Rhodes reached when Hornet centerfielder Tom North dropped a fly ball. After Hudnall was erased on Ian McPhee’s fielder’s choice, Ryan Kirk’s bloop single scored the winning run. Phoenix led 4-2 going into the fifth inning of the second game, then scored three runs to pad the margin. Mark Emerson delivered an RBI single, Brett Ellis had an RBI ground out and the third run scored on an error. Rhodes helped his cause with three hits and two RBIs. The Pirates received additional offensive punch from Brendan Ferguson (2-for-5, three) and Emerson (3-for-3).
