Q: We have an older model Emerson microwave. Although I have always kept it clean, for some reason the finish on the bottom of the oven in the turntable track is wearing off. The microwave still works well, but I am worried this could be dangerous. I feel we should replace it. My husband feels as long as it still works, it is OK to use. Can the bottom be refinished? If so, what would you use to refinish it with? A: If the paint has worn to the point any metal is exposed, arcing and possibly fire can result, said Frank Guerriero, senior vice president of operations for Emerson Radio Corp. He recommended you stop using the microwave oven immediately. The interior paint is baked on at the factory, so while Guerriero said you can repair minor scratches, you can't refinish the surface. "If the whole thing's worn, it really is time for a new microwave," he said.
