John Sharp of Medford was in serious condition late Wednesday in Rogue Valley Medical Center’s intensive-care unit, where he was being treated for head injuries received in a rush-hour accident, Medford police Lt. Mike Moran said. At about 7:45 a.m., Troy Ferguson, 34, of Phoenix, stopped at a red light, then turned east onto Barnett Road from a northbound freeway off-ramp. Ferguson, driving a 2003 Toyota pickup, apparently did not see Sharp in the crosswalk. The pickup struck Sharp at a "low speed" and knocked the 82-year-old to the ground, Moran said. Sharp was riding in a motorized cart used for transportation purposes. Moran said it appeared Sharp was operating his cart legally. He said carts like Sharp’s can be difficult to see because they "sit low to the ground." No citations have been issued in connection with the wreck. The police investigation will be forwarded to the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office for review.
