PREP FOOTBALL: Big plays help Crusaders topple Bruins By Mail Tribune staff Updated: Oct 15, 2022 12:06 AM A A After TJ Flowers’ electrifying 80-yard opening kickoff return set the tone for St. Mary’s on Friday night, quarterback Tyson Delplanche did the rest with four first-half touchdown passes as the Crusaders rolled past Brookings-Harbor, 49-14, at Lithia & Driveway Fields. “It was good to get this one because it gives us a spot in the playoffs, leading into the last two weeks healthy and we’re happy the way it went,” said coach Jamie Young, who has his Crusaders locked into third place in the Far West League. With his open field ability on full display, Flowers finished with three total touchdowns and Jaden Foster also helped lead the Crusaders’ aerial attack with two TD catches of his own. Delplanche, who did most of his damage in the first half, finished 8-for-9 for 204 yards, with his lone incompletion being an interception. “He threw the deep ball well tonight and kept his composure, which I think is something really tough to do for someone that’s never played quarterback before,” said Young of Delplanche. Midway through the opening quarter, Foster was able to get behind two Bruins and haul in a 15-yard TD from Delplanche to give the Crusaders (6-1, 6-1 FWL) a 14-0 lead. On the ensuing drive, the Bruins (1-6, 1-6) mishandled a pitch and lost the fumble, setting up another Crusaders’ scoring strike where Delplanche rolled out to the right and found Flowers wide open down the sideline. Flowers made the catch, juked two defenders with a spin move and side-stepped before powering through a final tackler into the end zone for a 21-0 advantage in the first quarter. Senior offensive lineman Kyan Hidde was able to line up in the backfield and muscle in a goal-line TD run before Delplanche capped the half with a pair of long-range touchdowns. Delplanche found Foster down the left sideline for a 68-yard TD before scoring in the final seconds of the half with a 55-yarder to Flowers, who made a leaping grab, stayed on his feet despite contact from two defenders and raced into the end zone to wrap up a 42-point half for the Crusaders. In the third quarter, Spencer Patten blocked a Bruins punt, gathered the ball and returned it to the 5-yard line and led to a 3-yard Indiana Olson touchdown run. Flowers paced the Crusaders with five catches for 123 yards and added 65 rushing yards on three totes. Foster had three catches for 81 yards and Olson carried the ball eight times for 40 yards. Defensively, St. Mary’s was able to shut down Brookings-Harbor’s run game and Delplanche came up with two interceptions. “The defense played particularly well,” said Young. Reed, who was 6-for-21 for 119 yards with one interception, threw touchdowns to Peyton Maurer from 58 and 20 yards. Reed also led the Challengers (7-0, 7-0 FWL) in rushing, going for 113 yards on 12 carries and added 31- and 13-yard TD runs in the first half. Maurer had three catches for 86 yards, Brody Sample added five carries for 80 yards and Cole Shields went for 49 yards and a touchdown on five rushing attempts for the Challengers, who ran for 272 yards as a team. Defensively, Cascade forced four turnovers and Shields came up with two interceptions. The Honkers’ record dropped to 3-4 overall and in FWL. Selden came up with back-to-back touchdowns for the Pirates (0-7, 0-7 FWL) in the first half. After hauling in a 14-yard TD from senior quarterback Hunter Everhart to cut Sutherlin’s lead to 14-12, Selden intercepted Bulldogs quarterback Ely Palm and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown that gave the Pirates a 20-14 lead. After Palm scored one of his four total touchdowns to give Sutherlin a 21-20 edge before halftime, Cody Martin opened the third quarter by ripping off a 66-yard touchdown run that gave the Pirates their final lead, 26-21. Hayden Hicks scored the game’s opening touchdown for Phoenix with a goal-line run. The Bulldogs improved to 2-5 both overall and in FWL play.
