Photo by Jim Craven Eagle Point center encourages kids to go to college By JONEL ALECCIA EAGLE POINT ­ When Rich Buractaon dons a cap and gown to march across the Eagle Point High School football field next Saturday, he'll graduate with a half-million dollars in possibilities stretching before him. That's the amount ­ $535,000 to be exact ­ in scholarships and grants that colleges and universities across the country offered to the quiet, dark-haired son of Filipino immigrants. (More...) Governor set to pick Jackson County work camp and prison site By VICKI GUARINO If the governor follows what has become his custom in selecting prison sites around Oregon, a cattle ranch on the outskirts of Medford will become home to 400 minimum-security inmates. Sometime in the next few days, Gov. John Kitzhaber is expected to decide where in Jackson County the state Corrections Department should build a $25 million minimum-security work camp. The site must be suitable for the eventual construction of a 1,600-bed, medium-security prison in addition to the work camp. Together, the institutions would cover about 75 acres, with the rest of the 320 acres serving as a buffer. (More...) Endangered Species Act looking a little less endangered By MARK WIGFIELD WASHINGTON ­ The law that protects plant and animal species from extinction survived a key test vote before Congress left town for its Memorial Day recess last week. Faced with a choice between a bill that environmentalists feared would gut the 24-year-old law and a more moderate reform proposal, Congress chose moderation. That choice leaves the controversial Endangered Species Act looking a little less endangered itself when Congress returns this week. But the politics involved also casts doubt on whether Congress can make changes in the law that could make it more effective in protecting animal and plant life. (More...) Mail Tribune Home Page
