Man jailed after allegedly groping jogger on Bear Creek Greenway ... Oregon man who killed officer had long criminal record ... COLLEGE BASKETBALL Altman keeps options open with Ducks Comment By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard Posted May. 27, 2015 at 2:00 AM By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard Posted May. 27, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News EUGENE — Dana Altman is not limited by traditional basketball positions. Last year, the Oregon coach moved Joseph Young to point guard for the final 15 games of the season and it paid off with another late-season push to the NCAA Tournament. Next season, the Ducks appear to have a wealth of point guards and just one player viewed from the outside as an off guard, but Altman doesn’t look at it that way. “We just play guards,” he said. “A lot of people put numbers on them and things, but we try to take advantage of mismatches and so forth. We try not to put a lot of numbers on people. We’ve got players, we’ve got guards and we try to figure out how to mix and match them together. “You guys want to put labels on them, but we work hard not to. We figure out who can do what and put them in a position to succeed.” That worked last year when Young, a senior, played point guard for the first time in his collegiate career. He responded by leading the Ducks to a 12-3 record down the stretch while averaging a team-best 3.75 assists per game. That move allowed Altman to put more size in the starting lineup by inserting 6-foot-4 senior Jalil Abdul-Bassit. During the first 21 games, Altman switched between starting freshmen point guards Ahmaad Rorie and Casey Benson before bringing them both off the bench at the end of the season. Benson and Rorie are the lone two returnees in the backcourt and the Ducks have signed Kendall Small, a prep point guard from Anaheim, Calif. Senior Dylan Ennis has said he will transfer to Oregon from Villanova and his former coach, Jay Wright, said Ennis was looking for a school that would give him a chance to play point guard. Some combination of those four point guards will see plenty of time on the floor together because the only other guard on the roster is expected to be Tyler Dorsey, a freshman from Los Angeles who has committed to the Ducks. He will be Oregon’s tallest guard at 6-foot-4 and more of a traditional shooting guard. He averaged nearly 34 points per game as a senior at Maranatha High School. Altman looks for similar versatility on the front line without a true center on the roster. Six-foot-nine Jordan Bell was a rim protector for the Ducks last year while leading the Pac-12 Conference with 2.7 blocked shots per game. Chris Boucher, a 6-10, 200-pound transfer from Northwest College in Wyoming, is the tallest player expected on the roster along with sophomore Roman Sorkin while incoming freshman Trevor Manuel is 6-9. The Ducks return plenty of experience up front with Elgin Cook, Dillon Brooks and Dwayne Benjamin, who combined for 82 starts last year. The six returning players are able to work out with the coaching staff two hours per week under NCAA rules. Oregon’s five newcomers — and perhaps a sixth if Altman fills a 13th scholarship — are expected to arrive in the summer. Those who enroll in summer school starting June 22 may be able to join the team for an exhibition trip to Spain in August.
