Howard Jack Veal Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 25, 2016 at 2:00 AM Posted Feb. 25, 2016 at 2:00 AM » Social News Howard Veal, 91, passed away February 19, 2016. He was born August 5, 1924 to Howard William Veal and Ruth G. Veal in Pueblo, Colo. and moved at a young age to Rocky Ford, Colo. where he was raised. Jack graduated high school in 1942 in Rocky Ford. He was active in high school football, basketball, and served as president of his sophomore class among other activities. As a senior in high school when World War II started, his plans for college were put on hold. He joined the United States Navy in 1943 and served three years in the Navy Medical Corps. In December 1944 he married Dorothy Hirt and they subsequently raised four children. Jack moved to Southern California where he completed his education in medical laboratory technology. In 1948 he accepted a job in Deadwood, S.D. working as a lab technician at a Catholic hospital. After five years there, he moved to Medford, Ore. and went to work for a group of doctors. In January of 1959 he received an opportunity to own and operate his own medical lab. Seizing that opportunity, he owned Valley Medical Laboratory until 1991 when he retired. In 1968 he married Anna Schultz who preceded him in death in 2002. Jack was very active in the 20-30 Club, was a lifetime member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and was a member of the Medford Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Temple, and Hillah Shriners. He very much enjoyed his membership in the Shriner's Royal Order of the Jesters and participated in many parades on a bicycle built for eight and mini-Corvettes. Jack also enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and bowling. He is survived by his son Dan; daughters, Susan Wiswell (Charlie) and Patti Perkins (Dwight); stepson, Keith Schultz (Debbie); stepdaughter, Linda Solorio; four grandchildren, Oscar, Raymond, Brian, and Shelley; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas and his daughter-in-law, Michelle. A celebration of life witll be held at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, March 6, 2016 at Bear Lake Mobile Home Estates, 300 Luman Road, Phoenix, Ore. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner's Hospital in Portland, Ore.
