William Leroy Gurge, 40, of the 700 block of Cambridge Street pleaded no contest to a charge of fourth-degree assault Wednesday in Jackson County Circuit Court. The charge will be dismissed if he completes classes on relationships and parenting. Gurge had faced charges of second-degree assault, third-degree assault and fourth-degree assault. Gurge and the woman, Alyssa Murray, split custody of their teen son but have not spoken in years because of their contentious relationship, said Gurge's defense attorney Garren Pedemonte. On March 13, they were exchanging the teen in Ashland. Murray said her arm fell into Gurge's car, while Gurge said she reached in and was grabbing the car. Gurge closed his electric power window before she could remove her arm. He took his foot off the brake pedal and rolled a few feet with her arm pinned in the window, Pedemonte said. An affidavit filed by Ashland police in March said Murray was dragged approximately 100 feet, causing injury to her arm, shoulder and back. Pedemonte said Gurge called police after the incident but was arrested and taken to the Jackson County Jail on charges of kidnapping, assault and harassment. "The kidnapping charge was because she was moved that couple of feet," Pedemonte said. Gurge later was indicted on charges of second, third and fourth-degree assault, but not the kidnapping charge. Pedemonte said the incident was relatively harmless and didn't warrant any Measure 11 charges. Second-degree assault carries a minimum sentence of five years and 10 months in prison upon conviction under Oregon's tough-on-crime Measure 11. Jackson County Circuit Judge Kelly Ravassipour lifted a no-contact order that had barred Gurge from seeing his son as the case moved through the court system. She kept a no-contact order in place between Gurge and Murray. Ravassipour advised Gurge to use a third-party instead of meeting Murray in person when they exchange their son.
