After that property sold in 2001, asphalt was snuck in with a story that it was only until the local freeway was repaved. Several years go, Mountain View Paving began to dramatically expand its efforts and intensify asphalt production. Yet from Day 1, this was done without any legal permits. In fact, MVP has spent 13 years pretending to apply for proper permits. According to Jackson County Code 1420.04, no one “shall occupy land unless all permits are obtained, and in force.” Repeat: all permits. Our taxpayer-paid county commissioners and code-enforcement officers cannot ignore the law in order to appease a favored business owner, and they must protect our citizens. The recent explosion at the Knife River plant proves that asphalt production can be dangerous. It’s not only about the odor. When a skunk sprays, it stinks; however, skunk fumes aren’t carcinogenic, but asphalt fumes are. Even during “air stagnation” notices, MVP continued pumping heinous fumes. This is shameful, reckless, illegal and unacceptable. D. Pestlin Talent Decision detestable The Medford School Board has just made a despicable and disgraceful mockery of real American history by adopting the book "American Pageant" for the 10th grade advanced placement classes. In reading the recent article about this, the board was challenged by two citizens, Joel Marks and Stuart Sennett, on the efficacy of this book and its historical moorings. By a vote of 4-2, it seems that the board members have not really read the book themselves, but relied on the words of others, particularly the publishers and their staff. Without studying the book themselves, they do a disservice to the public, the teachers and particularly to the students. History is not politics, and if it becomes such, it must be considered biased and will not allow students to know the true and amazing history of this great nation. It is a sad day when school board members slowly but surely poison the well of pure history with pure propaganda, and then wonder why our country has lost the very history which isn't being taught. This detestable decision of the Medford School Board cannot stand. Connie Skillman Ashland Deniers retreating Many congressional representatives continue to stick their heads in the sand, and many state and regional representatives do the same. Yet, even the hardiest of climate science deniers outside Congress are now retreating as they recognize the absurdity of positions that have been obviously flawed for years. The American Legislative Exchange Council long promoted efforts to undercut proposals addressing global warming — even in Oregon, they opposed eminently sane Renewable Energy Standards for utilities. ALEC continued promoting the falsehood that scientific uncertainty about global warming and its causes exists when, in reality, no uncertainty has existed for years. ALEC has now decided its previous position is untenable and has threatened legal action against organizations identifying what were obviously its convictions. The Heartland Institute, a right-wing think tank, has promoted climate denial for years, publishing articles by climate deniers that could never get published in credible peer-reviewed scientific literature. Now, a prominent Heartland spokesperson declared it: “a rather extreme position to … allow dangerous pollutants to destroy the only planet we know of that can completely sustain human life…” and argues we should reduce carbon dioxide emissions. It is time for all climate science deniers to open their eyes and think.
